If my dog has worms can it affect my family?

Yes, dog roundworms (Toxocara canis), hookworms and tapeworms can all cause disease in people and it is one of the reasons why regularly worming our pets is so important.
People who are particularly at risk include pregnant women, babies, toddlers and immunocompromised individuals such as the elderly, diabetics and people with HIV-infection.†

Infection may occur if a person swallows the microscopic roundworm eggs, for example having picked them up on their hands from contaminated soil. The real damage is done by the larvae (active immature form) of the worm, as they migrate through a person’s body from the gut. In rare cases, if the larvae end up in a person’s eye, it can lead to blindness. Hookworm larvae can also cause problems if they come into contact with your bare skin, they can burrow into it, causing itching, irritation and visible tracks. This is a condition called Cutaneous Larva Migrans (CLM) or ‘creeping eruption’.

We can also become infected with an intermediate stage of some species of tapeworm if we swallow tapeworm eggs. It’s even possible (though uncommon) for people to develop a tapeworm infection if they swallow an infected flea.

Is there a connection between fleas and worms?

Fleas can be infected with the larval stage (active immature form) of the flea tapeworm. If your dog swallows an infected flea, they can end up with a tapeworm infection.

How can I tell if my dog has worms?

The problem is that often, you can’t. In many cases you simply won’t know if there are worms hidden inside your dog’s gut as symptoms can be difficult to spot.

Symptoms can sometimes include irritation around the dog’s bottom. Mature tapeworms start shedding egg-filled segments, which irritate your dog’s bottom as they wriggle out (and may resemble grains of rice in your dog’s stool). This irritation often causes the classic symptom of tapeworm infection known as ‘scooting’, when your dog drags their bottom along the ground to relieve the itch. Apart from this, there are a few other symptoms to look out for, such as vomiting, diarrhoea, a dull lifeless coat, loss of appetite, lack of energy and (especially in puppies) a pot-bellied appearance. If you notice any of these signs in your pet you should consult your vet for advice.

Why should I worm my dog?

Even though a low level of infection may not show any signs, as you can imagine it’s not ideal to have parasitic worms living in your dog’s gut. It’s important to remember that worms can cause disease in people too, so regular worming of pets will give you peace of mind that you are helping keep these unwanted visitors away from your dog and family.

Can I prevent my dog from getting worms?

Unfortunately, no, you can’t completely stop your dog coming into contact with worms. However, using a wormer like Drontal Tasty Bone Wormer Tablets regularly will help combat every type of common intestinal worm found in UK dogs.

Can I use a flea treatment on my pet at the same time as Drontal?

Yes, Drontal Tasty Bone Wormer Tablets can be used alongside other flea products, for advice on this please speak to your vet or retailer.

Can I do anything else to help reduce the risk of worms?

Cleaning up your dog’s faeces is a great way to reduce the risk. A single dog roundworm (Toxocara canis) can produce up to 85,000 eggs a day, and these are all excreted when your dog goes to the toilet. Clearing up your dog’s mess will help reduce the potential of leaving eggs in the environment and infecting other dogs and people.
